Or how I call the series, GQuack.
I’ll preface I’ve yet to watch a Gundam before Wing, but I at least know about Amuro and Char through memes. That’s something, right? So I at least got the story somewhat.
Pre-viewing:
Haha, what a silly name.
I largely enjoyed Witch of Mercury, so I was open to having a FeMC for the series.
That Studio Khara was involved was also a surprise. I like the EVA mech design and they really did just make EVA-Gundams for GQuack. That Char played a role did spark my interest as well, and the OP/Promo music was as catchy as G-Witch’s first OP.
Machu’s design sheet looked neat, Nyaan felt a bit flat. Didn’t care much about Shuji.
Post-viewing:
First episode, high hopes. Machu gave off the ol’ cool & spicy, Nyaan a shy introvert.
But oh boy, what followed after…
The moment Machu went doki-doki and started chasing Shuji mindlessly for the kira-kira addiction, it’s like she lost all personality from the first episode. Meanwhile, after a scuffle in the earlier episodes, Nyaan become the most interesting character of the two. How the heck did that happen?
The battle scenes were very Rebuild of Evangelion-esque as well with the shading and obviously the mech design, so at times it did just feel like an extension of EVA.
I think I enjoyed it more in the earlier episodes where clan-battles were still a thing.
Shame what they did with Shiiko and Deux, but it only having 12 episodes as well compared to the usual multi-season Gundam shows, I guess they were strapping for time.
I liked Shiiko…
Challia was also a cool character.
Shuji’s 180 in the finale, the reason of GQuack’s existence, and Machu being all over the place was generally messy, and I doubt having a bit more context of OG Gundam would’ve fixed that, judging by the reactions from those that did watch them.
There were some interesting episodes between the departure from Machu’s colony and the extremely rushed ending, but I guess that is what would describe the series best: Rushed.
I did still end up ordering some kits and figuarts :<
